Uttarey is a small village in the western part of Sikkim, India located close to Nepal border. Uttarey is a hidden and virgin paradise on earth and is also popularly known as the ‘Base Camp for adventure tourism for the Singalila Range Eco – Tourism Trekking Trail towards Kanchenjunga’. Apart from this Uttarey is an important ‘Gateway of International Indo – Nepal border trade route’ through Chewabhanjyangla pass. Uttarey is set at an altitude of 7600 feet. The word Uttarey is derived from many nomenclatures like ‘Utey – Tarey’ a Limboo language meaning ‘call and bring together’, thus Uttarey was named from the habitations made by different communities who were called and brought from different places a century ago by the Limboo Chiefs for giving them shelter as neighbours in that area. It was only the factual beliefs by the octagenerarian people of Uttarey.
Apart from that in other beliefs the name Uttarey is derived from a Nepali word ‘Uttar’ meaning north. In the south part of the valley of Uttarey, there is a holy perennial source of water stream flowing out towards the North and hence the name Uttarey. In the extreme north-east corner of the lake, in the jungle there lays a ‘Jalpa Devithan’ a ‘temple of Goddess Durga’ who is believed to be the guard of the lake. The village of Uttarey is surrounded by hilltops, waterfalls, frothing rivers, evergreen forest, medicinal herbs and mountain hamlets. The village of Uttarey lies on the lap of Singalila Range with Phoktey Dara in the west and Neydham (Dichenphu) in the north. The valley of Uttarey is ideal place for Eco-tourism, educational tours, zoology, Ornithology and ethnology. From a vantage point of Uttarey on a clear day the panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan ranges of Mt. Everest. Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Lotse, Mt. Nuptse in the west and Mt. Khangchenzonga, Mt. Pandim, Mt. Kabru, Mt. Narsing, Mt. Rathong, Mt. Siniolchu, Mt. Koktang in the east are clearly visible. In the month of October – November Uttarey blooms with numerous Cherry Blossom. While in the month of Mar – April the whole valley of Uttarey blooms with Rhododendrons.   • Chewa Bhanjyang: Chewa Bhanjyang is a high altitude mountain pass set at 10500 feet on the border of Nepal and India. Chewa Bhanjyang is located around 14 km away from Uttarey. The Sikkim government is building a road from Uttarey in West Sikkim to Chiwa Bhanjyang and is the first road link between Sikkim and Nepal.

  • Neydham Holy Cave: Neydham Cave is located around 19 km from Uttarey on the ridge of the boundary of two constituencies Maneybong – Dentam and Yangthang. The word Ney Dham is also known as Ney Dham Danra is a combination of Lepcha and Nepali word. The word ‘Ney’ in lepcha means ‘Holy Place’ and ‘Dham’ in Nepali language means ‘dwelling place of god and goddess’.
  • Gumpadara – Mangheem Thegu: From Uttarey valley a walk of 15 minutes there is a hill top view point named as Gumpa Dara as well as Mangheem Thegu. This spot offers excellent view of Singalila Range – Phoktey Dara, Cheewa Fangzong La Pass in the West, Ravangla, Padamchen and Nathula Range in the east, Neydham Dara in the north and Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in the South.
  • Lameni Pokhri: From Uttarey a drive of 15 minutes or trek of 45 minutes will reach at Lameni Pokhri set at 8100 feet in altitude. Lameni Pokhri offers stunning view of Sunrise along with snow-capped Himalayan ranges of Nathula Pass and Jelep La Pass in the east. Apart from that as Lameni Pokhri is set at the boundary of Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary hence one will get maximum bird sightings along with wildlife sightings.
  • Kal Kalam Pokhri: In the corner of Sherpa Tourism Village of Uttarey towards Barsey Trekking Trail there is a small and sacred lake named as Kal Kamal Pokhri. The locals believe that in order to fulfil any good wish one need to pray around the lake.

How to reach:

By Air: Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to Uttarey located at a distance of 163 km via NH10. Bagdogra Airport is well connected by regular flight services with Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi. From Bagdogra Airport tourists will get hired or reserved vehicle service to reach Uttarey. From Bagdogra Airport if reserved vehicles are not available, then one can avail shared vehicles upto Jorethang and from there by another vehicle one can reach upto Uttarey.
Apart from that Uttarey can also be reached from Pakyong Airport located at a distance of 133 km via NH10. From Pakyong Airport tourists will also get reserved vehicles to reach Uttarey.

By Train: New Jalpaiguri railway station is the nearest rail head to Uttarey located at a distance of 156 km away via NH10. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station is well connected by regular railway networks with Kolkata and other major cities of India. From NJP railway station tourists will get reserved vehicles to reach Uttarey. Or one can also hired shared vehicles from NJP railway station/ SNT bus stand upto Jorethang and from there by another reserved vehicle one can reach upto Uttarey.

By Road: Uttarey is well connected by good motor-able roads with Siliguri (152 km) the gateway to the hills and also to Sikkim. From Siliguri SNT bus stand tourists will get vehicles service upto Uttarey. Or from Siliguri SNT bus stand tourists will also get bus service and shared vehicles service upto Jorethang. From Jorethang tourists will get reserved vehicles to reach Uttarey. Apart from that Uttarey is also well connected with other popular tourists destinations of Sikkim namely Pelling (35 km), Gangtok (150 km), Darjeeling (94.5 km) via Jorethang, Soreng and Kaluk, Yuksom (62.8 km) and others.

Best time to visit:
Uttarey can be visited throughout the year, but as Uttarey is a mountain valley one should avoid the monsoon season due to messy road condition. Summers (April to June) are the best time to witness the blooming Rhododendrons and the climate also remain pleasant. From October to March the weather usually remains clear and is also the best time to witness the snow-capped Himalayan ranges of Mt. Kanchenjunga along with maximum bird activity. During the months of December and January the sometimes temperature may drops below the minimum range and hence makes it chilly.
