NAINITAL

Nainital is a small Himalayan town lies in the Kumaon region of Indian state of Uttarakhand, nestled at an altitude of about 2084 meter (6837 ft). The whole region of Nainital is surrounded with lakes and hills all over. The main attraction of Nainital is centered with the famous Naini Lake which is about 1372 meter long and 457 meter wide, several small boats floats on the lake. Boating on Naini Lake is one of the main activities of tourists visiting Nainital. The name of this hill town Nainital derived from the name of goddess Naini Devi whose temple lies on Northern side of the lake. Round the year numerous tourists visits this temple as a pilgrimage site. Near this temple of Naini Devi there is a Gurdwara, Tibetan Market, Sports complex, Mosque and Bara Bazar Market. Nainital is also known as the city of lakes. Nainital was founded in the year 1842 by an English trader from Sarahanpur P. Baren who was a sugar merchant. The beauty of the place attracted him so much that he built a cottage of European style. Later Nainital became one of the summer escapes for the British.  The town of Nainital is divided into Mallital and Tallital and these are connected with the mall road. In the year 1858 the Methodist Church of Nainital was built. At Nainital one of the main attractions is the Snow View Peak lies at an altitude of about 2278 meter, but tourists need to avail the route either by trekking or on horseback or by cable car that remains open from 10.00 am to 04.00 pm. To avail the cable car there is a rope-way station at Mallital. On a clear day Snow View Peak offers magnificent view of Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, Nandacot and other Himalayan peaks. Nainital offers excellent view of Sunrise from Naina Peak or China Peak nestled at an altitude of about 2610 meter. To reach Naina Peak or China Peak one needs to travel either by trek route or on horseback. At Mallital near Darothi Seat there is the family residence and museum of Jim Corbett which is known as Garni House. Here tourists get to see things used by Jim Corbett along with his house which is very well decorated and also opened tourists. Other local watch able around Nainital is the famous Lands Down that offers excellent view of pentagon shaped Khurpatal Lake. From Nainital bus stand with in a distance of 1.5 km is the Govind Ballav Pant High Altitude Zoo, here tourists get to see many of the high altitude animals those are kept here among these some are Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Siberian Tiger and many more. Except Monday and other public holidays the zoo remains open for visitors. From Nainital within 26 km is Naukuchiatal Lake that nestled at an elevation of about 1220 meter, the lake measures in 983 meter long and 693 meter wide and it is one of the deepest lakes in Nainital. This is an ideal spot for butterflies and bird watching. From here at around 22 km is Bhimtal, mainly famous for its water sports activities. At Bhimtal the Bhimkeshwar Temple, Folk Heritage Museum and Hanuman Giri (famous for sunset) are worth watching. From Nainital around 23 km is Sattal Lake nestled at an altitude of about 1370 meter. Sattal comprises of seven small lakes, the ambience is full of lush greenery all over. There is wooden bridge constructed on Sattal, tourists can also avail boating on Sattal. The region is home to around 200 species of Himalayan birds. From Nainital around 52 km is Mukhteswar lies at an altitude of about 2286 meter, there is an age old temple of Lord Shiva on the hill top. In the month of March Mukhteswar host Festival of Flowers. At Nainital on the north lies Mallital and to the south lies Tallital. From Naini Lake around 20 minutes there is a Botanical Garden that houses to numerous varieties of floras and Orchids. Jim Corbett National Park lies within 142 km from Nainital. From Nainital around 17 km is Pangot. The whole region is guarded with numerous Oak, Pine, Fir and Rhododendron trees. This is home several Himalayan birds like Woodpecker, Eurasian Jay, Scimiter Babbler, Kaliz Phesant, Himalayan Bulbul, Grey Bushchat, Red Billed Blue Magpie, Himalayn Griffen, Blue winged Minla, Slatey Backed Forktail, Rufous Belly Niltava, Eurasian Jay, Green Backed Tit, Black Headed Jay, Rufous Bellied Woodpecker, Brown Fronted Woodpecker, Grey Treepie, Black Eagle, Oriental Turtle Dove and Maroon Oriel but the main attraction is Chir Phesant and Koklas Phesant. From Nainital at a distance of about 12 km is Kilbari, it offers magnificent view of Kumaon hills. From Kilbari tourists can visit Khurpatal and Saritatal, apart from these others spots include Suicide point, Lovers Point and Barapathhar. Near Sukhtal centering a natural cave on the hilly terrains there is Eco Park, garden, Hanumangiri Temple and View point. Bhimtal is a hot spring lake, boating at Bhimtal is another part of activity during your stay at Nainital. The temple of Lord Shiva at Bhimtal was built during the 17th century. From Bhimtal around 21 km is Nainital. Nainital is also famous for its wide varieties of handmade wax items. These are widely available in the Bara Bazar area. Apart from these wax items, other items those attracts tourists are the handicrafts made from Pine Wood and metal. There is a bus terminus at Nainital, tourists can avail bus service for the entire city tour. But it is better to reserve a car for the entire tour. Jams and Jelly made from apple, apricot and peach are very tasty and worth buying. One special type of soft drink made from the juice of rhododendron flowers Buransh Squash available at Nainital which is very good for heart. Winter garments are also available at Bara Bazar near the mall road.

How to reach: By Train: The nearest rail head is Katgodam. From Howrah station 13019 Bagh Express. Apart from this Weekly 12353 Lakuan Express departs from Howrah railway station on every Friday and arrives Lalkuan on the nest day. From Lalkuan at a distance of about 20 km is Haldwani and around 26 km is Katgodam. Other way is via Delhi. 15035 Uttaranchal Samparkakranti Express and 15013 Ranikhet Express reach Kathgodam from Delhi. Nainital is around 34 km from the nearest rail head Kathgodam.

By Bus: Bus service is available from Delhi. Tourists need to reach Delhi either by train or by flight. Nainital is well connected with bus service from Delhi.

By Flight: The nearest airport is Patnagar, which is around 72 km from Nainital.
