MURGUMA – PURULIA

Murguma is a small village covered with lush greenery of Sal, Palash and Piyal trees all over. Murguma is located to the north of Begunkodar within Jhalda block of Purulia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Murguma village is situated at the foothills of Ayodhya Hills, Purulia. Murguma is a tribal village of Purulia district and stands on the border area of Jharkhand and Purulia (West Bengal). As Murguma village is situated at the North West end of Ayodhya Hills hence it is considered as an extension of Chota Nagpur Plateau. Murguma village is mostly inhabited by tribal people – mainly the Santhal Tribes and the main source of livelihood of these local inhabitants of Murguma village is agriculture. Apart from agriculture from the last few years the Tourism Department of West Bengal Government is promoting Murguma village as a tourist spot for its immense natural beauty and most importantly the Murguma Dam which is gaining popularity in the tourism map of Purulia. Gradually Murguma village is gaining popularity as one of the promising tourist spots of Eastern Chota Nagpur Plateau region. As Murguma is a part of the Ayodhya Hill range hence it is frequently visited by tourists as a stopover en-route to the main Ayodhya Hills.

  • Murguma Dam and Reservoir: Murguma Dam and Reservoir is the top most local attraction in Murguma village. The Murguma Dam is constructed on Saharajhor River which is a tributary of River Kangsabati. Murguma Dam is surrounded by thick natural vegetation and hills from all sides along with small islands formed on the reservoir. Murguma Dam is a part of one of the key small irrigation projects in rural as well as arid areas of West Bengal. Murguma Dam is a popular picnic spot. The heavy currents of the water of River Saharajhor have been restricted by way of constructing a dam and the water are deposited at a place and gave birth to a massive sized lake. Muguma Dam is located 55 km away from Purulia town.
  • Ayodhya Hill Top: Ayodhya Hill (also known as Ayodhya Pahar) is located at a distance of 18 km away from Murguma village via Ayodhya Hill Road. Ayodhya Hill is a popular tourist spot in Purulia with undulating lands and scattered hills. Ayodhya Hill is a part of Dalma Hills and is an extended part of Eastern Ghats range.
  • Charida Village: Charida is a craft village known for traditional mask making which are generally used in Chou Dance. Charida Village is located at a distance of 32 km away from Murguma village via Ayodhya Hill Road.
  • Bamni Falls: Bamni Falls is a waterfall located at the heart of Ayodhya Hills at a distance of 23 km via Ayodhya Hill Road. Bamni Falls is set amidst thick natural vegetation and the waterfall is overcoming rocks making it a sight worth visiting.
  • Mayur Pahar (Hills): Mayur Pahar also known as ‘Peacock Hill’ is a picturesque hill within Ayodhya Hill circuit of Purulia. Mayur Pahar is located at a distance of 18 km from Murguma Village via Ayodhya Hill Road. Mayur Pahar is set at an elevation of 700 meters and is known for its lush greenery, diverse flora and panoramic view. Apart from that Mayur Pahar is a popular spot for picnics and bird watching.
  • Upper Dam: Upper Dam in Purulia is a part of Purulia Pumped Storage Project located at a distance of 21 km from Murguma villa via Ayodhya Hill Road. The Upper Dam is a rock filled structure which is 65 meters high and 800 meters long, with a lake over 01 km long.
  • Lower Dam: Lower Dam in Purulia is also a part of Purulia Pumped Storage Project located at a distance of 26 km away from Murguma village via Ayodhya Hill Road. Though smaller in size the Lower Dam is tucked within hills with a viewpoint on the road over the reservoir that gives panoramic view of the lake and towering hills.
  • Khairabera Dam: Khairabera Dam is an irrigation Dam in Baghmundi block of Purulia district located at a distance of 27 km away from Murguma village via Hill Road. Khairabera Dam is located in Chota Nagpur Plateau surrounded by Hills, forests, streams and waterfalls. The lake at Khairabera Dam is a popular spot for migratory birds.
  • Marble Lake: Marble Lake (also known as Tarpania Lake) is a popular tourist attraction in Ayodhya Hills in Purulia district. Marble Lake is located at a distance of 19 km from Murguma village via Ayodhya Hill Road. Marble Lake is known for picnics, camping and photography. Marble Lake was formed when the stones were quarried for mining, leaving a fragment of Kangsabati River trapped between marble horns.

How to reach:

By Air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkata is the nearest airport to Murguma located at a distance of 250 km away from Purulia. From Kolkata Airport tourists can either opt to avail train, bus or private vehicles to reach Murguma Village. Apart from that Murguma can also be reached from Birsa Munda Airport at Ranchi located at a distance of 92 km away via Ranchi – Purulia Road.

By Train: From Santragachi Railway Station tourists can avail Rupashi Bangla Train at 06.25 am and reach Purulia Railway Station at 12.30 pm. From Purulia Railway Station at a distance of 45 km away is Murguma Village. Tourists need to take Ranchi Road to Murguma via Begunkodar and is a journey of 1.5 hours. One can also opt to avail train from Howrah Railway Station to Muri Junction in Jharkhand which is at a distance of 35 km away from Murguma Village.

By Road: Murguma is well accessed by good motor-able roads with Kolkata and other surrounding locations. Murguma Village is located at a distance of (290.7 km via NH314), (325 km via NH19) and (323.3 km Bardhaman – Bankura Road and NH314) from Kolkata by road. Apart from that Murguma Village is located at a distance of 45 km away from Purulia town. Murguma village can also be reached from Ranchi of Jharkhand which is at a distance of 89.4 km away via Ranchi – Purulia Road. Murguma village is also well connected by good motor-able roads with Bankura (127.5 km) via NH314, Asansol (123 km) via Asansol – Purulia Road, Bokaro (60.4 km) via NH18, Jamsedhpur (113.8 km), and other part of both West Bengal and Jharkhand. From Kolkata tourist can opt to avail private vehicles to reach Murguma which is a journey of about 7.5 hours.

Best time to visit: Murguma can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to visit Murguma is the winter season from October to February. During this time of the year the climate remains very clear and makes it easy for tourists to travel in and around Purulia. Apart from that March is also an ideal time as during this time the village of Murguma blooms with red coloured Palash flowers which is a worth admiring sight. March – April are considered as the most comfortable off-season when the rainfall is less and makes it good for local sightseeing also. Monsoon at Murguma village are also very scenic with the surrounding lush greenery, thick natural vegetation and pleasant winds.
