
DEHING PATKAI NATIONAL PARK
Dehing Patkai is a national park, wildlife sanctuary and an elephant reserve in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia in the Indian state of Assam. Dehing Patkai National Park is under Digboi Forest Division of Soraipung Range and Jeypore Forest Range of Dibrugarh Forest Division. As the name suggests ‘Dehing Patkai’, this wildlife sanctuary or national park is situated at the foothills of Patkai Hill ranges and on the banks of Dehing River (a tributary of River Brahmaputra). Dehing Patkai is often called ‘The Amazon of the East’. Dehing Patkai National Park harvests the largest stretch of lowland rainforest in India. Dehing Patkai National Park covers an area of 231.65 sq. km of rain forest. Dehing Patkai National Park is situated in Dehing Patkai landscape and is a dipterocarp – dominated lowland rainforest. In actual Dehing Patkai National Park is spread over Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Charaideo districts in Assam followed by Tirap and Changlang districts of Arunachal Pradesh covering an entire area of 575 sq. km. Dehing Patkai National Park is also known as Jeypore Rainforest. Dehing Patkai National Park is a deciduous rainforest interspersed with semi evergreen and lush green natural vegetation. Dehing Patkai National Park comprises of Jeypore, Upper Dehing and Dirok in Assam and is endowed with rich bio-diversity. One side of Dehing Patkai National Park is bounded by the terai regions of Assam while on the other side is Arunachal Pradesh (adjacent to Namdapha Wildlife Sanctuary).
History of Dehing Patkai National Park:
Dehing Patkai as a potential wildlife sanctuary was identified in the late 1980s during a survey as ‘Upper Dihig Wildlife Sanctuary’. Late in the early 1990s during a study on White Winged Wood Duck, Dehing Patkai was discovered as a globally important site for this duck and recommended to be upgraded to ‘Upper Dehing National Park‘. Later in 2004 on 13th June Dehing Patkai was declared as a wildlife sanctuary. Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary was also declared as Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve under Project Elephant. On 13th December 2020 the Government of Assam declared Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary as a national park. And finally on 09th June 2021 the Forest Department of Assam officially declared it as Dehing Patkai National Park.
Flora found in Dehing Patkai National Park:
The vast forest expanse of Dehing Patkai National Park is dominated by Hollong, Nahar, Meloni, Mekai, Dhuna, Uriyam, Nahar, Chamkothal, Bher, Hollock, Nahor, Ou – Tenga (Elephant Apple) and different species of Ficus. Apart from that the four layered rainforest of Dehing Patkai is laden with many exotic orchids and bromeliads. Along with that Dehing Patkai National Park is abundant in Ferns, Epiphytes, Wild Banana, Orchids, Arums, Climbers and Lianas in this humid forest habitat. The ground cover of Dehing Patkai National Park mainly has Melastoma, Leea and other species.
Fauna found in Dehing Patkai National Park:
Dehing Patkai National Park is dominated by wide range of fauna and Avifauna. So far 50 mammal species, 47 reptile species, 293 bird species and 301 butterfly species are recorded to be found in Dehing Patkai National Park. Among which seven cat species found in Dehing Patkai National Park are namely Marbled Cat, Jungle Cat, Golden Cat, Leopard Cat, Clouded Leopard, Leopard and Tiger. Dehing Patkai National Park also forms a natural habitat of seven species of monkeys namely Slow Loris, Assamese Macaque, Stump – Tailed Macaque, Pig – Tailed Macaque, Rhesus Monkey, Capped Langur and Hoolock Gibbon. Other noteworthy species found in Dehing Patkai National Park are Chinese Pangolin, Dhole (Indian Wild Dog), Himalayan Black Bear, Malayan Sun Bear, Crab – Eating Mongoose, Small – Toothed Palm Civet, Binturong, Asiatic Elephant, Gaur, Red Serow, Sambar, Barking Deer, Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Malayan Porcupine and Asiatic Brush – Tailed Porcupine.
Avifauna found in Dehing Patkai National Park:
Dehing Patkai National Park harbours about 293 species of birds among which 63.7% is resident birds, 23.1% are winter visitors, 2.5% are summer visitors and 10.7% are altitudinal migrants coming from higher altitudes of the western, central and eastern Himalayas. The abundant avifauna or bird species of Dehing Patkai National Park includes White Cheeked Partridge, Kalij Pheasant, Grey Peacock Pheasant, Oriental Darter, Lesser Adjutant, White Winged Wood Duck, Pied Falconet, Slender Billed Vulture, White Backed Vulture, Greater Spotted Eagle, Besra, Black Baza, Osprey, Pale Capped Pigeon, Green Imperial Pigeon and many others. However Dehing Patkai National Park is mainly known as the habitat of White Winged Wood Duck (the state bird of Assam).

Best time to visit:
The best time to visit Dehing Patkai National Park is from October to April as the weather remains pleasant and dry. Winter (November to February) is the ideal time to witness migratory birds. Winters are also ideal for maximum outdoor activities. Monsoon is best avoided. Dehing Patkai National Park remains open from 08.00 am to 05.00 pm. Some entry fees are required to enter the national park which is as applicable.
