BAGORA

Bagora is a lesser known un-spoilt hamlet of Darjeeling district situated within the sub division of Kurseong. Perched at an altitude of about 7100 feet (2165 meter), Bagora is still an unexplored hamlet surrounded by the Himalayan ranges and one can get the picturesque view of the snow clad peaks of Mt. Kanchenjunga on a clear day. The tall conifers and bamboo trees along with thick forest of Alpine, Fir and Oak forms the dense wilderness of Bagora. The landscape scenery and serenity of Bagora offers a soothing refuge from the madding city crowd. Being sited near to Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary Bagora receives wide species of birds those inhabit the region which can be spotted in the early hours. To name but a few are Fire Tailed Sunbird, Green Tailed Sunbird, Misses Golden Sunbird, Rufous Sibia, White Capped Redstart, Blue Whistling Thrush, Rufous Winged Fulvetta, Bar Throated Siva, Rufous Capped Babbler, Nuthatch, Chestnut Thrush, White Throated Laughing Thrush, Himalayan Blue Thrush, Scarlet Minivet, Rufous Gorgeted Flycatcher, Blue Fronted Redstart and many more. In the month of November to January, Bagora gets ornamented with Darjeeling oranges also known as Himalayan Mandarin, while during the month of spring Bagora gets bloom up with thick Rhododendrons all over.

Things to do and see:

  • The winding mountain valleys along with terraced farming and small houses of the local communities attract the view of every visitor at Bagora.
  • Chimney village is located around 05 km away Bagora, which is known for the ruins of a tall chimney built here during British period in order to supply with boiled water to their Army.
  • At Chimney village there is a nursery built by Father Abraham which is a must visit from Bagora.
  • A short trek trail emerged from Bagora that meets upto Zero Point located around 1.25 km uphill which is a base camp of Indian Air Force. There is also a helipad ground sighted here that offers stunning views of the snow-capped Himalayan ranges along with the meandering flow of River Teesta gushing between the valleys to the far bottom. While trekking through this route one may encounter with occasional visit Himalayan Bear, Deer, Giant Squirrels and others wildlife species.
  • From Bagora in a day trip tourists can visit the nearby spots like Mungpoo (12 km away), Namthing Pokhri (11 km away), Latpanchar (15 km away), Dowhill (09 km away), Dowhill Forest Museum and Chatakpur Eco Village.

How to reach:

Air: Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to Bagora. Bagdogra is well connects by regular flight service from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities of India. From Bagdogra airport around 39 km away is Kurseong and again from there around 17 km away is Bagora. From Bagdogra Airport tourists will get shared/ reserved cars upto Kuseong and from there one needs to avail a reserved car upto Bagora. Or tourists can also reserve a full from Bagdogra and reach upto Bagora.

Rail: New Jalpaiguri/ NJP railway station is the rail head to Bagora. From NJP railway station or Siliguri on the way to Darjeeling after crossing Kurseong tourists will reach at Dilaram. Shared jeeps, cars and buses are available those drop tourists at Dilaram which is located 3.5 km away from Bagora. Tourists can also reserve a full car service from NJP railway station upto Bagora. From Dilaram the route to Bagora is steep uphill.

Road: Siliguri is well connected by road with Kolkata, Guwahati and other major cities of India by strong road network. From Siliguri SNT bus stand or Siliguri town tourists can either reserved a full car upto Bagora. Or tourists can also avail shared car service either upto Kurseong or Dilaram. From both these places reserved car service will reach them upto Bagora. Bagora is located about 15 minutes driving distance from Dilaram

Best time to visitBagora can be visited throughout the year, but is advisable to avoid the monsoon. Winter is the best time to witness the snow-capped Himalayan ranges as the sky remain clear during this period. Winter is the best time to witness the oranges grown around this region. Summer is pleasurable at Bagora. Climate remains almost clear. While March and April is the best time to witness the Rhododendrons in full bloom.
