BARAMANGWA – THE PLACE:

Baramangwa is small village on the hilly slopes with terraced farming and orange orchards make the place beautiful and eye-catching. Situated at a sub-division of Darjeeling hills. Baramangwa is at an altitude of about 4500 ft. Settled atop Darjeeling Hills towards the western side of the Kalimpong hills in the Teesta Valley, with magnificent view of the confluence of Teesta and Rangeet Rivers on one side and with Kalimpong Hills on the other side. Though it is a hilly area and the weather here is cool and pleasant, but severe cold do not affect here. From orange orchards to very precious organic medicinal herbs are cultivated at Baramangwa. The locals here are mainly Nepalis and sherpas. The livelihood of the locals here is cultivation of organic foods (terraced farming) and homemade pickles. There are small trek routes that pass through the orange orchards which are worth enjoying. One can also enjoy the view of Peshoke Tea Estate which is a 3 km trekking from Baramangwa and if you can trek another 4 km you will get down at Teesta bazaar, where river rafting are worth enjoying. During orange ripping season, varieties of Himalayan birds assemble here to get their part. Baramangwa is growing rapidly as a tourist destination along with Chotamangwa, Tinchuley and Takdah. Baramangwa is within 30-40 minutes from Chotamangwa, and 45 minutes from Tinchuley, so the next time you plan your trip for North Bengal, this circuit of Tinchuley, Baramangawa and Chotamangwa within 3 to 4 days tour can be one of the good alternative.  

Few Things about Baramangwa: From Baramangwa Kanchenjunga is not visible, but one can have a clear view of the Kalimpong hills on one side and the clear view of flowing Teesta River. Baramangwa is mainly consists of Farmhouses and cottages. These are the properties of the locals which are run and maintained by the themselves. There is also another accommodation just near the Orange orchards. You can take long nature walks all along the orange orchards or simple gaze at the blue hills all around. You have a lot of opportunities for activities at Bara Mangwa. Trekking and rock climbing are abundant and so is river rafting in the waters of Teesta. You first have to get down at New Jalpaiguri Railway station and then take NH-31A straight to Teesta Bazaar. From here you need to take left after crossing the Teesta Bridge to reach Bara Mangwa village.

While travelling to Baramangwa from NJP one will come across the Sevoke coronation bridge and the Peshoke Tea Estate, lover’s view point. Though hills have its own unique beauty. But among all this, Peshoke Tea Estate and Lover’s view point are worth watching. From lover’s view point, the meeting point of River Teesta and River Rangeet are clearly visible. In this sector “community based eco tourism” has gown which enhances the financial betterment of the locals.

How to Reach: Baramangwa can be reached from New Jalpaiguri via Sevoke and Teesta Bazar which is about 45 km. It takes about 3 hrs journey by car. The last few kilometers are totally isolated. Car bookings are available from NJP station which will take you to Baramangwa or you can also book car from the respective hotels before your journey they will send the car for Pick up. Best time to visit is mid September to Mid June.
