KUMAI
Kumai is a lesser known upcoming offbit destination in Dooars region under Kalimpong sub division. Kumai is a small settlement located at the Terai regions of West Bengal, Dooars at an elevation of around 3000 feet. From Metali via Kumani point after passing by a village there is Kumai River. To the far horizon mountain ranges just beneath is a picturesque village, green coloured valleys and flowing Kumai River. After crossing by a small uphill route, one will step into wide spread tea gardens. From there the Himalayan ranges are clearly visible. This lesser known hamlet settled partly on the Terai regions and partly on the hills overlooking the vast plains is named as Kumai. As far as our naked eyes can see Kumai is spread with long stretches of dense greenery. Kumai is divided in two parts one is lower Kumai and the other is upper Kumai. Upper Kumai is comparatively more eye catching. Kumai is mainly inhabited by Gorkhas and other tribal people. From Kumai to the far horizon the entire Dooars region can be seen along with River Murti that reflects its silver colour. At Kumai there is an old monastery, the history of which goes 200 years back. Other local watchable around Kumai includes Halley View Point, Kumai Park, Laliguraus Point, Green Valley and along with the valleys of Bhutan to the far end. From Kumai one can visit the nearest destinations like Chapramari (18 km), Gorumara (33 km), Murti (23 km), Gorubathan, Samsing, Suntaleykhoa, Jhalong, Bindu (23 km). If anyone is looking for staying in the rural peace exploring the foothills of Himalayas then Kumai is an ideal place for you. Kumai comprises of lush green tea gardens, valleys, forest land, river and agricultural land.
Things to do: There are several things to do at Kumai, one can go for trekking, fishing at the nearest river or village walk. Kumai is also an ideal spot for bird watchers, as it is the home of The Great Indian Hornbill, along with Minivets, Peacock. On can also spend the day angling in Jaldhaka River.
How to reach: From Howrah, Sealdah or Kolkata station several trains are available that connects to NJP or New Mal junction. From New Mal Junction by car upto Chalsa and Kumani point, from there Kumai is at a distance of about 25 kilometres. From New Jalpaiguri about 80 kilometres via coronation bridge, Bagrakote & Chalsa and from Bagdogra about 90 kilometres, time takes about 4 hours.
Best Time to visit: Kumai can be visited throughout the year; the cool breeze summers and the chill winter are more attractive. Though winter is an ideal time for bird watchers.
