Digha is West Bengal’s most popular sea resort and tourist spot located south- west of Kolkata located around 187 km away. Digha was discovered in the late 18th century by the British. Warren Hastings gave Digha the name ‘Brighton of the East’ in one of his letters (1780 AD) to his wife. Otherwise it was also referred to as Beerkul. In 1923, an English tourist John Frank Smith was charmed by the beauty of Digha and took up residence there and in his writings about Digha, it slowly gave exposure to the location. Digha beach has a low gradient with a shallow sandy beach with gentle waves, which extends for 07 km. The scenic beauty of Digha is charming and luring. Digha sea beach is girdled with Casuarina plantations along the coast enhancing the beauty of this place. These trees apart from beautifying the beach also aid in reducing the sand erosion on the dunes. Sunrises and sunsets are equally magnificent from Digha Sea beach. The sun’s rays reflecting on the salty waters of the Bay of Bengal as if they came fresh from an artist’s palette. Presently Digha became a weekend tourist’s hot spot. Digha is divided into two different parts Old Digha and New Digha. Digha Sea beach is one of the widest beaches in the world. Old Digha is not at all recommended for bathing in the sea. For bathing tourists can choose New Digha or Udaipur for bathing in the sea.

Amarabati Park: The Amarabati Park is located at New Digha is a natural wonderland for tourists visiting Digha. There is a lake inside the park named as Amarabati Lake which offers boat ride facilities for tourists. A rope-way is installed across the full length of the park that offers aerial view of the park. A newly built Toy Train in also installed inside the park for children amusement. The park is decorated with seasonal flowers.

The Marine Aquarium and Research Center (MARC): It was established in the year 1989. The major objective of the center is to display the biodiversity of the region and impart its values to the common people and to carry out the research activities. MARC has largest inbuilt marine aquarium in the country and equipped with sea water circulation system and advanced filtration unit.

Lord Shiva Temple at Chandaneshwar: Located around 08 km away from Digha the century old Temple of Lord Shiva at Chandaneshwar is located near Bengal and Orissa border. Nearly half million people and pilgrims visit the temple at Maha Vishuva Sankranti or Gajan Mela towards the end of Chaitra, sun reflecting on the sea waves in the east and the local fishing – boats on the coast offer excellent photographic opportunities.

Subarnarekha River: The salty place where Subarnarekha River draining into Bay of Bengal is only 12 km away from Digha, located in Orissa – Bengal border. This is a new destination for tourists visiting

Talsari: A small delta on Bay of Bengal, only 06 km away from Digha, located on Bengal – Orissa border. This is a quiet place, close to both Bay of Bengal and Subarnarekha River. Talsari is located around 04 km away from Chandaneshwar.

Junput Fishery Project: An offbit destination located around 40 km away from Digha by road. From Junput tourists can visit the Marine Biology Museum, Kapal Kundala Temple and Dariapur Lighthouse. Junput is mainly known for fishing.

Shankarpur: Shankarpur is located around 14 km east of Digha by road. Shankarpur is mainly known for Shankarpur Fishing Harbour Project which was constructed by the local authorities. Due to the presence of huge boulders on the sea beaches, tourists are banned from bathing in the sea at Shankarpur. There are many temples located at Shankarpur which are worth visiting.

Digha Science Center: The latest attraction of Digha is the National Council of Science Museum or Digha Science Center. This museum or Science Center attracts numerous tourists and children those who come here to witness different types of models and also to enjoy 3D show of different things which also provides a way of educational tour. Digha Science Center is located at New Digha.

Udaipur: Udaipur is a calm and peaceful sea beach situated on the bordering area between Orissa and West Bengal located around 02 km away from New Digha. Udaipur Sea Beach is covered with thick natural vegetation along with thick casuarina plantations at the backdrop. Udaipur sea beach is spread over 03 km long between New Digha and Talsari. There is a delta located nearby where the mighty River Subarnarekha merges into Bay of Bengal. On the Sea beach there are make shift stalls and sitting arrangements for tourist, where one can sit and enjoy the fresh coconut water.

How to reach:

Air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkata is the nearest airport to Digha. From here tourists will get bus and car service to reach Digha which is a driving distance of about 4.5 to 05.00 hours.

Rail: Digha railway station located at New Digha is the nearest rail head which is well connected with Kolkata and other major cities. From Sealdah railway station of Kolkata several trains are available those reaches upto Digha.

Road: Digha is well connected by strong motor-able roads from Kolkata and also other nearby cities. From Kolkata Esplanade area both public and private bus through surface transport tourists can reach Digha and it takes about 04 to 04.05 hours. Tourists can also avail reserved car service or private car service to reach Digha.

Best time to visit: Though Digha is mainly a weekend destination and can visit throughout the year, but the best time to visit here is November to March.
