Takdah or Tukdah is mainly known as an old British Cantonment area and a neighbourhood in the Rungli Rungliot CD block in the Darjeeling Sadar subdivision of the Darjeeling district, West Bengal, India. Takdah is fast developing as a tourist center of the Darjeeling hills with stunning mountains, scenic landscapes, the tea gardens, blooming orchids, the walking trails through the coniferous forests on mountain slopes and Old British Bungalows. Takdah is nestled at an altitude of about 4000 feet, the original name was pronounced as ‘Tukdah’, a Lepcha word is meaning ‘Mist or Fog’. The name is aptly given as Takdah or Takda often remains covered with fog. Takdah was once used to be a British cantonment and a number of British used to stay here for the local cinchona plantation as well.

History of Takdah:
Takdah has a rich history within itself. Takdah was developed as a cantonment area by the British around 1911. The British developed Takdah with Tea Gardens and bungalows at Takdah and introduced numbering system to identify those bungalows. Till date the same system is uninterrupted. After independence when the British left India, Takdah was left abandoned with its historical structures along with its eye catching panoramic view of tea gardens. Later passed through several hands these structures of Takdah were bought by the local people and redeveloped as government offices, schools, monasteries, churches and residential places. Meanwhile as the concept of Eco Tourism started developing here, these heritage houses were refurbished with modern amenities while keeping the heritage architecture and were opened for tourist’s accommodation.

Throughout the year numerous tourists rush to Darjeeling hills with an expectation to catch some of the finest views of world’s 03rd highest peak, but tourists visiting Takdah should know that being settled at an average altitude, Takdah does not offers any such view, but instead it offers stunning views of some of finest Tea Estates of Darjeeling Hills along with winding mountain valleys and stunning Sunrise.   1. Tea Estates of Takdah: Takdah is home to some of the finest tea gardens of Darjeeling district like Rungli Rungliot, Gielle, Namring, Poomong, Jinglam and Teesta Valley Tea Estate. Tourists can opt for a local vehicle at Takdah and visit these tea estates along with a tour in these tea processing factories.
  2. Takdah Orchid Centre: Among the host of attractions and activities of Takdah, Takdah Orchid Centre is an exclusive sanctuary to a rarest and a wide variety of orchids located around 500 meters away from the market area towards 06th Mile.
  3. Tinchuley: Tinchuley is another tourist spot located around 03 km away from Takdah. Tinchuley is mainly known for its spectacular views of the snow-capped Himalayan ranges of Eastern Himalayas.

  16. Dara Dokan: Dara Dokan is a weekly market held every Thursday at Takdah. Dara Dokan is a place worth visiting as people from all the nearby villages come to shop their weekly needs.

How to reach:

By Air: Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the nearest airport to Takdah located at a distance of 67.8 km away. Bagdogra Airport is well connected by regular flight service with Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati.

By Train: New Jalpaiguri Railway station is nearest rail head to Takdah located at a distance of 60 km away. NJP railway station is well connected by regular rail service with major cities of India. From NJP railway station it takes about 2.5 to 03 hours to reach Takdah.

By Road: Takdah is well connected and easily accessible by road with Siliguri, NJP railway station and Bagdogra Airport. Apart from this Takdah is also well connected with the nearby tourist destinations like Darjeeling (28 km) and Kalimpong (40 km). Tourists will get both shared and reserved vehicles from all these locations to reach Takdah by road.

Best time to visit:
Takdah can be visited throughout the year, but it is advisable to avoid the monsoon season.
