Tabakoshi is an off-bit scenic village of Darjeeling district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Tabakoshi is nestled at an altitude of 3800 feet and forms a part of Gopaldhara Tea Estate. Set on the banks of River Rangbhang Khola, the whole village of Tabakoshi is guarded by lush green tea gardens and thick natural vegetation all over. The name Tabakoshi is derived from two different Nepali language, namely ‘Tamba’ and ‘Koshi’. As river Rangbhang Khola flows through Tabakoshi, during the monsoon season the water of the river turns copper like colour. In Nepali language copper is known as ‘Tamba’ and ‘Koshi’ is known as river. Hence the name of the village became Tambakoshi or Tabakoshi. The foundation stone of Tabakoshi tourism was laid here in December 1989, but after that for two decades Tabakoshi did not saw any activities towards development of tourism in this area. It was from the year 2013 when Tabakoshi came into limelight and developed as a tea garden based river side tourism location. Tabakoshi village mainly comprises of the lower valley of eight renowned tea estates namely Gopaldhara Tea Estate, Thurbo Tea Estate, Seyok Tea Estate, Turzum Tea Estate, Sungma Tea Estate, Chamong Tea Estate, Mangarjung Tea Estate and Nagri Tea Estate. The area of Tabakoshi is a part of Mirik sub division of Pokhriabong – Rangbhang valley and is inhabited mostly by Rai, Lepcha and Tamang community and their main source of livelihood is farming. But with the introduction of tourism at Tabakoshi, these locals inhabitants have started to build up small cottages to accommodate tourists in homestay system. The meals served to tourists at Tabakoshi are fully organic and are grown in their own farmlands.

Activities and attractions around Tabakoshi:

  1. Tabakoshi being a serene and calm tourist destination, here tourist can opt for a leisure holiday in the lap of nature surrounded by lush green tea estates all around.
  2. As Tabakoshi is located on the valleys of river Rangbhang Khola, hence Tabakoshi is an ideal location for river side camping and fishing/ angling.
  3. Nearby Tabakoshi there is a temple of Lord Vishnu which is the only Vishnu temple all over Darjeeling. And there is also a temple of Lord Shiva located near river Rangbhang Khola at Tabakoshi which is built in Pagoda shaped.
  4. There is a park located nearby Tabakoshi which is beautifully designed with lush green lawns, sitting arrangements and paved pathways for leisure walk. This park at Tabakoshi is guarded by rising mountains, lush greenery and tea gardens.
  5. Around Tabakoshi there are few tea estates located nearby which are worth visiting.
  6. From Tabakoshi tourists can opt for a half day hike to Achalal Busti, the place from where River Rangbhang Khola originates. This hike passes through the valleys of River Rangbhang Khola.
  7. From Tabakoshi tourists can also opt for a full day hike to Simana Dara (Indo – Nepal border) via Mirik.
  8. Mirik is located at a distance of 05 km away from Tabakoshi and tourists can opt for a full day sightseeing to Mirik and its surrounding spots like Mirik Lake, Bokar Monastery, Mirik Bazaar, Pashupati Market (Gateway to Nepal), Tingling Viewpoint and others.
  9. As Tabakoshi is an organic village hence tourists can also opt for a leisure walk by the village trails and visit the local farmlands or meet the local people to get a deep insight of their culture and traditions.
  10. Tourists can also opt for a leisure walk through the narrow trails of the tea gardens and visit different nooks and corner of the village. Apart from this there are few orange orchards situated nearby Tabakoshi which are also worth visiting.
  11. From Tabakoshi by a reserved vehicle tourists can visit Jorepokhri (01 hour by car) which is known to be the regional habitat of rare species Himalayan Salamander or Himalayan Newt.
  12. Other tourists spot can be visited from Tabakoshi are Lepchajagat (18 km), Soureni Tea Estate (14 km), Sukhiapokhri (14 km) and Pokhriabong (08 km).
  13. Bird watching and landscape photography are also among the best activities to indulge while at Tabokoshi. As Tabakoshi is also the habitat of numerous species of birds.
  14. Adventurous activities and night camping can also be experience at Tabakoshi.

How to reach:

By Air: Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to Tabakoshi located at a distance of 55 km away. From Bagdogra Airport via Mirik tourists can reach at Tabakoshi. From the airport tourists can either book a reserved vehicle to reach Tabakoshi (03 hours) or can also avail shared vehicle to reach Mirik and from there by another reserved vehicle upto Tabakoshi.

By Train: New Jalpaiguri railway station or NJP railway station is the nearest rail head to Tabakoshi located at a distance of 60 km away. From New Jalpaiguri railway station via Mirik tourists can reach at Tabakoshi. From NJP railway station tourists can either book a reserved vehicle to reach Tabakoshi (03 hours) or can also avail shared vehicle to reach Mirik and from there by another reserved vehicle upto Tabakoshi.

By RoadTabakoshi is well connected by road with the nearest gateway town Siliguri (58 km). Apart from that Tabakoshi is also well connected with Darjeeling (35 km), Mirik (05 km) and Ghoom (26 km) by road networks. Tourists will also get bus service from NJP railway station or Siliguri upto Mirik and from there by a reserved vehicle upto Tabakoshi. The route to Tabakoshi from Mirik Bazaar is via Thurbo Tea Factory and from there to the right turn via Rangbhang river valley and Gopaldhara Tea Estate. From Darjeeling via Ghoom, Sukhiapokhri and Pokhriabong one can reach at Tabakoshi.

Best time to visitTabakoshi can be visited throughout the year. For bird lovers winter is the best time. The summers are very soothing and a perfect gateway to escape the scorching heat of the city life. Monsoons at Tabakoshi are ethereal. The surroundings become green and fresh.
