ROLEP

Rolep is a small village of East Sikkim, lies on the banks of river Rolep Khola. Rolep is tucked on the slopes of the rolling green Himalayan foothills with panoramic views of the Ranpo Khola River Valley. Rolep is one of the new found gems of East Sikkim which gives a very authentic experience of village life and adventure along. For the last few years Rolep has emerged as a new tourist destination and village tourism has got another opening at Rolep. Rolep nestled at an altitude of about 3500 ft near Rongpo. Rolep is a small silent valley on the way to Silk Route. Rolep is inhabited by all indigenous communities such as Gurung, Bhutia, Sherpas, Chettri, Sharma and Rai. The main livelihood of the locals at Rolep is step cultivation that adds to the mainstream economy. Though tourism in the form of homestays also add to the mainstream economy. The main source of livelihood of the locals is farming, on the valleys of Rolep, here the locals grow rice and cardamom, though during the past on these valley tea plantation were carried out but now there is no sign of those remains. Rolep is blessed with abundant natural surroundings and numerous Himalayan flowers those grow here. Apart from these Rolep is home numerous Himalayan birds to name but a few Verditer Flycatcher, Green Backed Tit, Leaf Bird, Himalayan Bulbul, Streaked Spider catcher, Scarlet Minivet, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch and many more. Rolep can be easily included in the Silk Route tour itinerary.

Local watchable around Rolep

Sokey Khola Bridge (Highest bridge of east Sikkim) – While is Rolep, you can hike along the hanging bridge of Sokey Khola.

Buddha Falls – From Rolep around 5 km is Buddha Falls. The water of River ‘Sokeykhola’ is falling from a height of about 40 ft high and gave birth to ‘Buddha Falls’ or ‘Sokeykhola Falls’ and met up with River Rongpo. The water from Memencho Lake has flow downhill from the high mountains and met up at Rolep Khola.

Chochen Natural Lake or Cochen Pokhari – This small water body lies on top of the mighty stone located on the extreme north end of Rolep Buddha Dham, believe to indicate the drought and precipitation in this area. The water remains throughout the year till now which signifies the sufficient precipitation.

Dekiling Monastery – It is a small monastery located around Rolep, enthusiast can pay a visit for a pray that will rejuvenate your soul.

Buddha Dham (Epitome of divinity) – From Rolep around 3 km trek route reaches at ‘Buddha Dham’. There is an idol of Guru Padmasambhav and devotees from the far villages visit this place to offer their prayers.

Things to do at Rolep
Rolep is an ideal destination for nature lovers, bird watchers, landscape photographers and above all those who love to spend their vacation on the lap of nature with absolute silence all over.
At Rolep tourists can walk down the valleys in ecstasy, singing the song of divinity, blending your existence with eternity.
A short village walk by the gushing rivers, get drenched with the serene natural surroundings and met the locals as they welcome tourists to be a part of the daily life of the local villagers and taste some sumptuous local cuisines those are produced and processed naturally.
Enthusiasts can try angling some trout in the rivers or try some hiking and trekking arranged locally.
The Hot Stone Bath in the nearby river is also one of the famous activities to get involved at Rolep.

Getting There – The nearest railhead is NJP railway station and the nearest Airport is Bagdogra. From NJP railway station around 140 km is Rolep and it takes about 04 to 05 hours. Rolep is around 13 km from Rongli. From NJP railway station shared cars are available upto Rongpo, from there pick up arrangements can easily be done. Or Tourists can also hire cars directly from NJP railway station to reach Rolep. Before entering Rolep, tourists need to cross the motor-able hanging bridge known as Rangkey Bridge.

Best Time to VisitRolep can be visited throughout the year but the winter is pretty cool and offers great panoramic views of the valley to the far horizon. Monsoons are the best to view the utmost greenery along with the gushing waterfalls. Summer is ideal to escape the scorching heat of the city life.
