Pokhriabong is a small village in Darjeeling district, West Bengal, India. Pokriabong is lying beside Turzum Tea Estate, which produces one of the first flush Darjeeling Tea. Pokhriabong lies within the picturesque ambiance of Turzom Tea Estate bypassing small hilly terrains, lush green tea gardens, mountain valleys and waterfalls. Pokhriabong is an ideal gateway for a peaceful stay far away from madding crowd of city life for 2 – 3 days. From Siliguri via Mirik it takes around 3.30 hours to reach Pokhriabong. Darjeeling is about 28 km from Pokhriabong. The locals of Pokhriabong are mainly Buddhists and Hindus. Though Nepali is the common language here but the locals are also fluent in Hindi and English. The main source of livelihood of the locals of Pokhriabong is organic farming along with tourism and tea production those also adds to their mainstream economy. From Pokhriabong on a day tour one can visit the nearest spots like Tabakoshi lies near Rangbhang River and surrounded by Gopaldhara Tea estate, Sukhiapokhri, Pashupati Market, Mirik and Kurseong. The route to Pokhriabong from Mirik is guarded with wide varieties of wild floras. For birdwatchers Pokhriabong can also be an ideal location.
How to Reach:
Pokhriabong is well connected with NJP railway station the nearest rail head and Bagdogra the nearest Airport. NJP is about 68 km from Pokhriabong. Jeeps and cars are easily available from both Bagdogra Airport and NJP railway station as Pokhriabong is a full motor – able road. There are 2 different ways to reach Pokhriabong. One is via Mirik and Sukhiapokhri and another is through Kurseong, Ghoom and Sukhiapokhri. But tourists are required to avail 8 seated cars to reach Pokhriabong.
Best Time to Visit:
Though Pokhriabong –can be visited throughout the year but it is advised to avoid the heavy monsoon. Best part of the year is October to December. January and February remains very cold, but tourists those who likes the misty and smoggy weather they can avail the January and February. March to mid June is also very ideal for visiting Pokhriabong.
