Iccheygaon or Ecchaygaon is a small village or settlement nestled on the foothills of Himalayas, tucked within the forests of Pine, Birch and Juniper trees all around. On a clear day from Iccheygaon, Mt. Kanchenjunga is clearly visible. Iccheygaon is an open gallery for the view of Mt. Kanchenjunga. The word Iccheygaon derives from a Sherpa word means “Icchey – Highest point of a village and Gaon – Village”Iccheygaon is situated at an elevation of about 5800 feet and the locals of the village are mainly Sherpa, Rais and Bhujel tribes. The locals of Iccheygaon grow Elaichi on the slopes and valleys of the hilly terrains in the form of step cultivation. There are only 25 to 30 small houses of the locals throughout the village. Some calls Iccheygaon as ‘Wishing Village’. The Sailikharka forest is very near, and it spread from Dalapachand upto Damsang. If one keen for adventures, they can go short treks upto Damsang Fort. The route from Iccheygaon to Damsang Fort is through the dense thick forest. Though with changing phrases of time many of the beauty of this fort got washed out, but still few things remains which attracts most of the tourists for its historical importance like the bedroom of the King, bathing area of the queen, stable where the horses were kept and a stone well. Iccheygaon is also an ideal place for bird watchers and nature lovers. On the lap mountains within absolute silence all over, Iccheygaon could an ideal gateway. The night view at Iccheygaon has a different beauty within itself, as the lights of Darjeeling, Ravangla, Namchi twinkles it gives a majestic view. Iccheygaon is also home to few of the rare species of Orchids. Just within few kilometers from Iccheygaon is Ramitey View point that offers a spectacular view of Teesta. From Iccheygaon one can visit the nearby other spots like Sillerygaon, Algarah, Pedong, Kalimpong, Chibo, Lava, Rishikhola, Aritar and Mankhim. A trip to the famous Jalsa viewpoint, located 4 km away from Icchey Gaon is another celebrated spot within the Cinchona plantation and a British Bungalow. The site offers one of the widest view of the Teesta River and a gorgeous view of the Mt. Kanchenjunga range. One can also visit the ‘Silence Valley’ from Iccheygaon.

How to reach: Iccheygaon is at a distance of about 88 kilometers from New Jalpaiguri railway station and from Siliguri town at about 87 km. Iccheygaon is located on the route to Siliguri – Kalimpong – Munsong – Rongpo. From Kalimpong at a distance of about 15 kilometers.

Best time to visit: Iccheygaon can be visited throughout the year, but it better to avoid the rainy monsoon, as this time of the year the rivers get filled up to the brim. Mt. Kanchenjunga is best view from Iccheygaon in the month of winter as the weather remains clear. During the month of summer the cool breeze that blows along the valleys and the slopes gives a comfortable pleasant feeling.
