GHALAYTAR

A small Himalayan village from nestled on the lap of Mt. Kanchenjunga. This village is known by Ghalaytar. From Ghalaytar, one can get to the nearest spots like Latpanchar, Orange village Sittong and Land of Salamandar- Namthingpokhri. Ghalaytar is a new emerging offbeat destination in the Darjeeling hills. From New Jalpaiguri NH 10 has gone towards Sikkim, on the hilly tracks, while going by the left side of River Teesta one will get see a route diverted to the left had side that has divided into two parts. One route has gone towards Kalijhora and another route has intersected upto Birikdara. One may avail any one of the two routes and will meet at Mana crossing. From Mana through the uphill route one need to avail the right hand side and reach at Ghalaytar. Ghalaytar is absolutely an offbit destination. From Ghalaytar to the eastern side within 4 kilometers is Namthingpokhri. From there Ahaldara view point is another 1 kilometer. From Ghalaytar the 360 degree panoramic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga worth bliss to the eyes. From Ghalaytar at a distance of 3 kilometer is Latpanchar (a paradise for bird watchers), and by car it takes about 20 minutes. From Ghalaytar, the route to western side by the ridge at a distance of about 12 kilometer is Bagora, at about 10 kilometer is Chatakpur and Darjeeling is another 21 kilometer. All total from Ghalaytar upto Darjeeling the distance is about 33 kilometers. By car it takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. From Ghalaytar to the Northern side the by the downhill route is Orange village Sittong, and at a distance of about 6 kilometers is Jogighat, on the banks of River Riyang. In the winter Jogighat becomes an ideal picnic spot. From Jogighat a route has gone to the upper side within a distance of 5 kilometers and met at a Cinchona village Mungpoo. At Ghalaytar one can indulge in activities like rock climbing, landscape photography. Or you can just go around for a village walk and get to know about the daily life style of the people at Ghalaytar village. Few of the villagers at Ghalaytar have started the concept of Eco-tourism in their home, and provide accommodation for the tourists those who visit Ghalaytar. Though the main source of livelihood of the locals are farming.

How to reach: From New Jalpaiguri station via Kalijhora at a distance of 54 kilometers is Ghalaytar. Birikdara is about 59 kilometers. From both Kalihora and Birikdara a straight route has gone to the downward side and intersected at Mana crossing, from there to the right hand side 500 meter downhill is Ghalaytar main road.

Transportation: From NJP railway station or Bagdogra Airport several jeeps/ cars are available both in share and reserved basis those reaches upto Sittong via Ghalaytar. Or one can pre-book cars after getting confirmation from the respective homestays, these cars will directly takes you upto Ghalaytar.
