DAWAIPANI – THE PLACE

Dawaipani is a small Himalayan hamlet of Darjeeling district in the Indian state of West Bengal nestled at an altitude of 6500 feet and the village of Dawaipani is encircled with thick Pine trees and lush greenery all over. Dawaipani is a serene and tranquil tourist destination that offers jaw-dropping gorgeous view of the snow-capped Himalayan ranges of Mt. Kanchenjunga and other peaks on clear day along with the stunning Sunrise at the backdrop. The word ‘Dawaipani‘ literally translates into ‘Medicated Water‘ and the name is derived from local river (Khola) which passes through the village. This remote village of Dawaipani is set in the midst of thick Himalayan forest on the little ridge overlooking the hamlet and the valleys. Dawaipani is inhabited by around 130 to 150 families those are mostly Rai, Subba, Chettri, Tamang and others, majority of which are mainly involved in agriculture, cattle farming and poultry as their primary income source. In addition to that the local villagers of Dawaipani have also started harnessing the power of community- based tourism as an opportunity for additional income.   3. Dawaipani is an ideal location of bird watchers as the village is inhabited by wide species of Himalayan birds.
  4. As Dawaipani is situated just to the opposite of Darjeeling town, in the evening the emerald lights of Darjeeling and Lebong hills fading into daylight on the left along with the twinkling stars on the sky combines to form a different view.
  5. In the afternoon one can opt to sit on a large rock and paddling on a natural mountain stream that flows underneath, or treading through a stream that flows by the side of a dense forest.

How to reach:

By Air: The nearest airport to Dawaipani is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) located at a distance of 75 km away via NH110. Bagdogra is well connected with Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi by regular flight services.

By Rail: New Jalpaiguri Railway station is nearest head to Dawaipani located at a distance of 72 km away. New Jalpaguri is well connected with major cities of India by strong railway networks. From New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) tourists will get reserved vehicles to reach Dawaipani directly. But tourists opt to avail shared car service need to reach at Jorebungalow located around 14 km away. And from there by pick up vehicle one can reach at Dawaipani village.

By RoadDawaipani is well connected by good motor-able roads with Siliguri (70 km away), NJP railway station and Bagdogra. There are two different routes available to reach Dawaipani. One is through NH10 which is (Bengal – Sikkim Highway), by this route tourists need to come upto Teesta Bazaar and from there by the uphill road to Peshok and 03rd Mile crossroad/ crossing. And the second route is by NH110 (Siliguri – Darjeeling Highway), by this route tourists need to reach at Peshok via Jorebungalow. And from there one needs to reach at 03rd Mile crossing, from here a downhill hike or a rough cobbled stony ride from the nearest metaled road of 3.5 km reaches at Dawaipani. From this 03rd Mile tourists need to take a diversion in order to reach at Dawaipani.

Best time to visit:
Although an ideal holiday destination, Dawaipani can be visited almost throughout the year, but the best season to visit is between the autumn months of October to November and spring time of February to March. During this time the temperature remains pleasant and the weather is ideal for a trek. Winter season December to January is the best time to witness the Himalayan ranges along with maximum bird’s activity at Dawaipani.
