CHIBBO

Chibo is a small hamlet located with few kilometres from Kalimpong. Before entering Kalimpong town to the right hand side from 8th Mile petrol pump there is a U turn that will connect with few pitched roads. As we heard the name 8th Mile, it reminds us of Kalimpong Hills, Buddhists Monasteries, and the sounds of the bells those rings from these monasteries at the far horizon along with the beauty of Siniolchu and the excitement of Paragliding. From 8th Mile there is a hairpin turn to the upper side along the carpet roads those indicates to a small hamlet. The route leads to a peaceful destination called Chibo. At a distance of about 8 kilometres. Chibo comprises of crisscross hilly roads, village children, small houses on the hilly terrains, and numerous orchids those blossom up in the balcony of these houses. Chibo is also known as Chibo Basti. On a clear day form almost every nooks and corners of Chibo, Mt. Kanchenjunga is clearly visible. Chibo is also home to varieties of numerous Himalayan birds, some of those may include Himalayan Bulbul, Grey Winged Black bird, Lesser Whistling Thrush, Verditer Flycatcher and many more. At Chibo one will get to know the making organic foods for plants, Whiskered Yuhina is an insect species that helps in developing these organic pesticides. On the hilly terrains the locals used to cultivate Carrot, Broccoli, Spinach, Cabbage, and Chilly in the winter. Around the year these step cultivated lands at Chibo remain full of vegetables. As the Sun rises, on will get to see the changing colours on the Himalayan peaks along with with Mt. Kanchenjunga both during sunrise and sunset to the right hand side. From Chibo within a 15 walk by foot through the dense forest of Dhupi and Pine, one will reach at Eagle Nest View Point, from there to the far below flows River Teesta along with side by side the National highway that connects to Sikkim are worth viewing. Different times of the season Chibo, blossom up with different view. Chibo is situated at an altitude of about 4500 ft. In the month of February – March, the locals of this village grow different types of Orchids and flowers, those add to the beauty of Chibo.  During sunset Chibo looks very different. From Chibo on a single day journey one visit to the nearest destinations like Kalimpong, Pedong, Ramdhura, Eccheygaon. So the next time you are planning your trip to the Kalimpong hills, do not forget to include Chibo in the list, spending one or two days in this hamlet is a lifetime experience.

Things to do: One can go for village walk or just relax oneself just sitting on the hill top wondering of the hills and mountains. Those who are keen on landscape photography and birding could take route through the dense greenness. One can visit to the nearest places of Kalimpong and Delo.

How to Reach: From New Jalpaiguri railway station with a distance of about 65 kilometres is Kalimpong town. Before entering Kalimpong there is petrol pump to the right hand side. From there Chibo is about 4 kilometres and from Kalimpong town Chibo is about 8 kilometres. From Kalimpong bazaar with a distance of about 15 to 20 minutes one will reach Chibo.

Best time to visit: Chibo can be visited throughout the year, except the monsoon season. But if anyone is keen on viewing the monsoon of the hills, then Chibo can an ideal option.
